You should place the most important objects to the left and subordinate objects to the right. Next, you can place objects on the diagram that are instantiated by the UI or by other objects. This is an excellent tool for providing context for a use case. You can also place a “UI” (user interface) placeholder class on the diagram with which the actor interacts. As shown in Figure 1, it's a good idea to place the actor that initiates a particular sequence at the upper left side of the diagram. Objects that are involved in the sequence of events you are documenting should be placed at the top of the sequence diagram across its horizontal axis. Objectsįigure 1: A sequence diagram can be created for each use case in a software system There are four primary elements of a sequence diagram:įigure 1 demonstrates the use of each of these elements in a simple sequence diagram. In this article, we'll go step-by-step through the process of building a sequence diagram for a particular use case, but first, you need to learn about the different elements of sequence diagrams. So, what kinds of things should you document in a sequence diagram? Usually, a sequence diagram is used to document the logic of a use case (for a discussion of use cases, see Component Developer Magazine, Issue 2 - 2001). You may also discover that objects you originally thought should be involved in a particular process shouldn't be involved at all! Modeling Use Cases In addition, sequence diagrams help you easily identify unnecessary messages between objects and factor them out. At a higher level, it also helps you comprehend the overall flow of a particular process. In contrast, when you document your thought process in a sequence diagram, suddenly the answers to these questions become crystal clear. These questions are very difficult to answer correctly when you simply try to envision object messaging in your head. However, once you decide to elevate your programming by using business objects in your applications, sequence diagrams help you answer two very important questions: This is because if you're not using business objects, most of your application logic resides inside methods of user interface objects or in functions and procedures?and there really isn't much messaging that occurs between objects. Why use Sequence Diagrams?Īs mentioned in the previous article on class diagrams, unless you are using business objects in your applications, you won't have much need for sequence diagrams. While the collaboration diagram's main focus is to show how objects are associated with each other, sequence diagrams show the time ordering of messages between objects. Sequence diagrams are closely related to collaboration diagrams (discussed in the next article in this series). They are most often used in the construction phase of software projects and are especially useful when analyzing the process-intensive portions of your application. This third article in the series covers one of the most interesting diagrams in the UML - the sequence diagram. You often create a sequence diagram to model the logic of a use case. Sequence diagrams can help you comprehend and solve difficult issues in the process-intensive portions of your applications. It helps you document and understand the dynamic aspects of your software system - specifically the sequence of messages that are sent and received between objects. The Sequence Diagram is one of the most interesting and useful diagrams in the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Around the beginning of 2021 streamers started to drift away. The craze eventually came to an end though, as most hype trains do. Total hours watched increased from 535.2k to 177.5 million. Average Twitch viewer rank went from 602 to 68 (but averages at 2 after August 15 once things really start to sodapop off).Average viewers increased from 256 to 80.6k.The following data compares the time period between April 1st-June 30th 2020 to July 1st-September 30th 2020: Once a game starts to gain a little popularity on Twitch, it just keeps growing. A snowball pattern can be seen between FFXIV and Among Us here. Before long, sodapoppin and xQc were streaming the game to tens of thousands of concurrent viewers. But that was before a combination of 8 Korea based streamers started to play the game on a regular basis. The "who done it?" game released in 2018 to. Most people active in the gaming world are at this point keenly aware of Among Us, and have more than likely played it. Not the worst problem to have for a game with a new expansion coming out this fall.Īmong Us (Among Us official art, copyright Innersloth) In fact, FFXIV got so popular after this streamer craze, they briefly ran out of digital keys for the game. Channels like Rubius, summit1g, fextralife, and moistcr1tikal all joined in on the bandwagon. Several other high profile and mid tier streamers started playing FFXIV not long after Asmongold's viewership peak of over 210,000. Average Twitch viewer rank went from 53 to 22, peaking as the 2nd most watched game briefly on July 3rd.Total hours watched went from 4.9 million to 18.3 million. The average viewer count went from 7.1k to 36.6k.It's been 20 days since Asmongold decided to give FFXIV a try, and the following data compares the time period between June 1st-30th and July 1st-22nd. The most recent example of this hype phenomenon is Asmongold's venture into Eorzea with FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE (abbreviated to FFXIV for the rest of this article). Below we'll take a look at some real world examples of games that have gone through this scenario.įINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE (FFXIV ONLINE official art, copyright SQUARE ENIX) Game developers can also opt to contract streamers to play their games on or after release with the intention of increasing exposure and popularity. This type of organic occurrence can make or break a game. Now dozens of high profile and mid tier streamers are playing the game, rocketing it to the top of the Twitch charts. As other streamers see the fun and success Billy is having playing his new game, they hop on the hype train. But that's not all, these events generally have a trickle down effect. More and more people tune in, increasing the games exposure. Twitch regulars see that Billy is playing something other than their main game and thinks "Wow, it's unusual to see Billy playing a new game, I wonder what's going on?". Chat sees this merriment and thinks "Wow, this game seems really fun". Billy is having a genuinely good time playing a new game and living in the moment. And whad'ya know, they like it! All of a sudden, a game with a modest following and 5,000 average concurrent players is thrust into the limelight. Some big name streamer, lets call them Billy, decides to play a random recommended game via their chat, steam store, or a quirky online ad. On top of that, modern games desperately try to imbed themselves into your gaming routine with battle passes, seasonal rewards, and limited time events.ĭuring these frantic scrambles for games to establish themselves in the eyes of the masses, something miraculous occurs. The days of game loyalty are a vintage thought as the sheer volume and variety of video games continually increase. Most gamers are more than happy to jump ship from a "dying" game as soon as streamers stop playing it as frequently. The bigger question is how LONG will your game remain popular? The consumer side of video games is a rapidly moving and turbulent mass of people just waiting for the next big trend. What happens is that your game will become really, really popular. Alright well, the answer is kind of a no brainer. However, he rises above the nerd/gamer/pick-up artist stereotype and puts himself in danger to serve as Beth’s bodyguard. Gordon begins the film as the devil on Nick’s shoulder, encouraging him to ignore his studies and hit on Sara. Dustin Milligan helms the large ensemble and seems to be developing the loveable goody two-shoes persona we would come to love on Schitt’s Creek. However, as the plot thickens, many emerge from the pack and prove to be much more than clueless coeds.Įllis avoids merely recreating a soulless monster movie with a smart script and an impressive cast. The first few scenes admittedly play out like a clumsy assemblage of college stereotypes. Arriving at her lavish house, the friends relax with beer pong and water-skiing before a lake full of flesh-eating sharks crash the party. On the water, Sara races boats with Officer Sabin ( Donal Logue), the lake’s law enforcement who treats her with the goofy affection of an older brother. Red ( Joshua Leonard) and Dennis ( Chris Carmack) are local divers who resent the city folk who flaunt their wealth throughout town. Back in her hometown for the first time in three years, Sara bumps into familiar faces from her past. Along with his roommate Gordon ( Joel David Moore), friends Beth ( Katharine McPhee) and Blake ( Chris Zylka), and Malik’s girlfriend Maya ( Alyssa Diaz), they take a road trip to Sara’s ( Sara Paxton) house on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. To celebrate passing an important exam, football star Malik ( Sinqua Walls) insists his shy tutor Nick ( Dustin Milligan) join him and a group of friends for a weekend trip to the Louisiana Gulf. It’s a fun, but brutal homage to a classic and the perfect introduction to a film in which the sharks are deadly, but the human monsters prove to be the bigger threat.Įllis then shifts focus to our main cast of shark bait. In a sly wink to the iconic opening of Jaws, she thrashes back and forth in a rapidly growing pool of blood before disappearing under the surface. After tossing his girlfriend’s bathing suit out into the lake, this obnoxious man wanders back to shore for a sandwich while the unseen shark approaches to finish the job. Rather than the shark, she’s first attacked by her boyfriend who insists on taking her top off despite her pleas to leave her alone. After gliding along the lake’s murky floor, We approach a bikini clad bather standing in shallow water. Shark Night 3D begins with a bit of cringe. Ellis’s 2011 film manages to combine the teeth of aquatic horror with the slasher structure to create a bloody adventure that feels like swimming into the jaws of a Shark Week special. Though it eventually becomes necessary to show the face of the monster, the first person point of view creates an overwhelming sense of danger anytime a character ventures into the water, or the Myers house, or Camp Crystal Lake, etc. This technique is frequently seen in slasher films as well, used to conceal the identity of a killer lurking in the shadows. Bruce, the finicky shark star of Jaws, famously malfunctioned on the water, causing Steven Spielberg to film many attack scenes from the shark’s point of view. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.Īs sharks–even the fake ones–are notoriously difficult to direct, filmmakers are often forced to get creative. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. With the Mac Mini, all models from 2018 and later should work with MacOS Ventura. These devices have outdated specs, anyway, though the design and upgradability have some people still using them. The 2013 Mac Pro, 2012 Mac Pro, 2010 Mac Pro, and 2009 Mac Pro will not work with Ventura. Of course, the new Mac Studio, which people thought might replace the Mac Pro, supports Ventura, but here’s the list. These Macs did not yet get the Apple M1 or Apple M2 SoC, but they’ll still get MacOS Ventura, but only on models from 2019 or later. MacBook Pro and MacBook Air Omar Al-Ghosson on Unsplash I continue impressed with the little package GM put together. I'm a car guy who has owned over 40, driven the rest. Never had a better car, and have owned some great ones. definitely not a sports car, but handles well at reasonable speeds the AWD is seamless, and inspires confidence in winter snow. and so does my wife (it's Her daily driver). It should be there, or at least available as an option!! Storage areas are numerous but small lack of a passenger center armrest, or a shared center armrest/console is a definite oversight. Could use a bit more power for merging acceleration on short interstate highway ramps. It is a compact car with a small motor and should be treated as such, especially when heavily loaded with several passengers and their gear. I cannot find fault with either one, unless of course, I had just driven a $75,000 BMW and expected that kind of power and response from a Trax costing a third as much. Not sure why some reviewers have knocked the acceleration of the 1.4 litre turbo or the 6 speed auto transmission. Seats are chair height comparing favorably to any SUV on the road today. Rearview camera which activates on shifting to reverse is quick to activate, and offers a good look behind before and while backing. Entry and exit are easy and visibility from the driver seat is superior. This little crossover/SUV continues to be the best, easiest to drive, most comfortable subcompact vehicle I've ever owned and driven. This exact problem has been reported by others on the web site and other sites. Called Dealership and vehicle was again TOWED. Could not accelerate vehicle, Check Engine light was *FLASHING*, not just solidly lit but *FLASHING*. Tried to drive it to work and had to turn around and return home as it lost power and was shaking. This time the car started idling very rough when sitting in the driveway. Not sure what rear hub bearings have to do with "loss of power" and "engine vibrating when idling" but it did not fix the initial reported problem as it has been experienced numerous times since. They could not replicate it but replaced the rear hub bearings as they were growling. NOTE: This same problem was reported to the Dealership within 3 weeks after we purchased the vehicle. Current problem - Vehicle will loose power, fails to accelerate, starts shaking, Check Engine light will come on, Traction Control light will come on, OnStar will send multiple notifications Dealership replaced Turbo and Turbo pipe due to crack in pipe. I reported it again when our Trax was just towed back to the Dealership for another problem. GM / Dealership won't recognize problem nor fix yet others have experienced that same problem. Oil smell when engine is hot that comes through the A/C or Defroster when running Others have reported this exact same issue that resulted in accidents. That was less than 2 months ago and brakes have been working OK since that time. In our case, dealership replaced "Brake Vacuum Switch" but claimed this was not a warranty item (normal wear and tear) so required to pay full price for repairs. We have been lucky that the issues we have encountered have not resulted in an accident but others experiencing these problems have not been so lucky.īrakes fail - Press on pedal and it goes to the floor. There are *Numerous* complaints filed on the website with many customers experiencing the exact same issues that we have and I encourage everyone to review those complaints before purchasing this vehicle. The last two times it had to be towed backed to the Dealership. Purchased this car used in Jan 2019 with only 60K miles on it and have had to take it in 5 times in 7 months with *major* issues. It amazes me to see all these 4 and 5 star reviews as those that have can consider themselves extremely lucky that they have not encountered problems. Why Medical Writing Is A Great Career Option For STEM PhDs Plus, my first year out of graduate school, I made $90,000 as a medical writer and I haven’t looked back. My husband is a divorce lawyer, and he deals with emotional stuff, and I don’t have to deal with any of that. You’re dealing with scientists who are very professional about their work. The thing I like most about medical writing, is that it’s non-emotional and there’s a lot of integrity in the industry. If medical writing is something that you’re drawn to, then just believe in yourself and believe in the process, because life is too short to be in academia, if you don’t want to be. I faced quite significant opposition by my dissertation committee, about my decision to go into medical writing. I started editing people’s dissertations, taking on any freelance work I could, and then I also got a master’s in technical writing. I made the decision right then, that I was going to become a science writer, and then it morphed into medical writing, which is a subgroup of science writing. I started searching online, and I found the National Association of Science Writers. That compliment came back to me, and I thought, “Well, maybe I can combine science and writing.” I had been told back in college that I had talent as a writer, and I didn’t think much of it at the time. So, I started thinking about the other skills I had that would combine well with science. I did not want to work 80 hours a week and earn a low salary. Right in the middle of my PhD, I knew that I had been working too hard, for too long, to do a postdoc. Based on the Industry Careers for PhDs Podcast with Emma Hitt Nichols, Ph.D. |
